Vijitha Basnayake
Architect of Kandé
Vijitha Basnayake, the ideal architect for this project, is an ardent follower of traditional architectural methods and eco-friendly ideology. He specializes in protecting building materials in their natural form and working with the natural contours of the land, which is why he chose to obtain colours on the walls with stains of natural substances rather than coloured paints.
Kande is built in two tiers to embrace the hillside while offering visitors maximum view of the spectacular scenery. Not a single tree was cut down during construction, in fact around 100 trees were planted at the completion of the project. Furthermore, no new timber was used. It is all secondhand timber sourced from demolished buildings, some of which are as old as a hundred years. These include the windows, doors, and roofing tiles.
